December 2021 Newsletter

Ahoy lads and lasses,

I would like to introduce a new member of the Whatknot Studios team!

I met Sophie Northcott at Santa Cruz Open Studios in October 2021 and am so happy to have her helping out in my shop. She has her BA from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with an emphasis in graphic design and unimaginable willingness to learn so many different techniques. I feel honored to have such a skilled person working with me. Sophie is also an accomplished painter, avid surfer and lifeguard in the waters off coastal Santa Cruz.

Please feel free to check out more of her work on her personal website: sophienorthcott.com

Still have some holiday shopping to do?

Well there's still time to grab some unique, made with love gifts from your favorite local artists while you celebrate a local business run by some amazing people here in Santa Cruz!

Shanty Shack Brewing is hosting their 5 year Anniversary on December 18 from 12pm - 5pm. Stop by and enjoy some food and beer all while saying hi to local artists and getting some last minute holiday shopping done. Sounds like a good day to me!

Zfolio Gallery

Zfolio Gallery and Monterey Metal Arts Guild are hosting the Looking Ahead Show featuring a few of my jewelry pieces from December 3, 2021 to January 3, 2022.

My featured pieces titled "Growth" are a matching sterling silver necklace and earring set. Both are inspired by the beauty and fluidity of Giant Kelp that grows along our coastlines and plays an incredibly important role in the health of our coastal communities. Fun fact: Giant Kelp can grow up to 2ft a day!

Stop by to see my work and the works of other talented local jewelry makers and silversmiths. Zfolio is a lovely gallery featuring tons of local artisans located just down the street from the Monterey Bay Aquarium and all works featured in this show are up for sale!

Happy Holidays!

Before the year is out, I want take a moment to thank my team on Patreon. This year I have been lucky enough to receive support from these lovely people:

Kim Clary, Andreas Kral, Kristen Lee, David Scruggs, Rich McGee, Kayla Michaels-Old, Rainer Richter, Kat Brown, Michael Baptist and Walt and Anna Spevak

Thank you for all the support over the past year. I would not be here without you and your passion for art and your support of small businesses.

I'll sign off this year with an old toast I heard from a friend and sailing mate that I treasure and love to use this time of year...

“There are good ships
there are wood ships
there are ships that sail the sea
But the best ships are friendships
and may they always be.”

Here's to you, may you have a healthy and happy relaxing holiday season with loved ones and a happy new year in 2022!

Cheers,

Courtney Renee Scruggs
