Necessity

…the mother of all invention.

I would say that pretty much sums it up but it doesn't, does it? This piece obviously started with the adage, "Necessity, the mother of all Invention" but then it took a turn. As I thought about it, I picked apart the bit about mother and what that means today. My mother was and is a strong, proud defiant woman who certainly created things when necessary. She could come up with a solution to any problem with what she had lying around and nothing would stand in her way. She needed a floor, she learned how to tile. She needed a gazebo, she went to the lumber store and learned as she went. No one could tell her she couldn't and although she was short, she oversaw everything that happened in our household with a sense of meticulous perfection that made me what I am today. So back to the adage, who is the mother of all invention. To me, her name is Necessity and she happens to take on the form of a crow. She proudly looks down on all that she's built. A story helps us to remember our morals and values in our culture and this bronze piece puts a physicality to the abstract thought of creationism. 

As far as the materials are concerned, this particular piece is made of bronze with a sterling silver hand railing and crow. The base is black granite. I really enjoyed playing with the different materials on this one and look forward to more of this in the future.
